Re: Berimbau Advice?
Fri, July 29, 2005 - 12:49 AMDid you get the berimbau as a kit?
Usually you string the bow much like a bow in a bow and arrow kind of way with the exception being that the top of the wire loops over the bamboo (there should be a groove there for this purpose) and gets tied off after a few revolutions around. KInd of vague advice, but it really is simple, just takes alot of muscle. You can check out capoeira.com as another resource.

Re: Berimbau Advice?
Fri, June 16, 2006 - 8:17 AMhere's a website with good info and links, if you haven't seen it:
www.rhythmweb.com/berimbau/
There's a little advice on construction there, but I've never found a full-on step-by-step guide. Just make sure wear some protective eyewear if you ever try to build one (seriously). If the wire snaps, look out.
also, just searching for "berimbau" on Google Video has some useful quick examples on technique:
video.google.com/videosearch
The hand position is well-represented here, and some traditional playing techniques with the stone, etc
www.capoeiraarts.com/
may have some useful info too
One tricky and sometimes maddening thing about the berimbau is keeping it in tune, although is only an issue if you're playing with others.

Re: Berimbau Advice?
Sun, June 18, 2006 - 8:09 PMDon't practice capoeira - I'm a musician in a band with a berimbau player, so am very familiar with it, but have only played a little myself. We use the instrument a bit non-traditionally (amplified, etc), and in some ways it sounds quite different than capoeira style. If you're interested, here's the band's website with info/mp3s/etc:
www.guymendilow.com/
Also, if you contact Guy through this website, I'm sure he'll be more than happy to talk berimbau with you - he made his in the traditional style while living in Brazil.
